PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP
The Portuguese passport is one of the most powerful in the world and is ranked 4th overall in the Passport Index 2024 and the Henley Passport Index 2024.
As Portugal is both a member of the European Union and of the Schengen Area, holders of Portuguese passports can move freely between member countries and take up residence there after a simple registration procedure.
Portuguese citizenship does not require renouncing other nationalities, if this is not required by the law of the applicant’s country, and can be obtained by Attribution or by Acquisition:
- Citizenship by Attribution (jus sanguinis or jus soli) takes effect from birth, allowing nationality to be passed down through generations and enabling applications for spouses or de facto partners, children and grandchildren;
- Citizenship by Acquisition takes effect on the date nationality is granted, not allowing citizenship to be passed down through generations, but enables applications for spouses or de facto partners, and for minors or children born after citizenship has been granted to the parent. Citizenship by acquisition can be applied for through a manifestation of will or naturalization.
